Note: appropriate pages are linked, hover your cursor over the appropriate wording (the things i just got/am considering getting)

I am an audio enthusiast.  I love listening to high quality music reproduced on high quality systems.  My current setup is as follows

Desktop - junky 5.1 system from logitech, probably about 300W total and worth new ~120.  Analog input only
TV - 5.1 420W total system I got about 8 years ago.  takes TOSLINK from TV, usually in ProLogic 2 mode.  obviously does not support more recent HD codecs
Headset - TBx12s, good considering the money but its only stereo, frequent problems with mic sensitivity, host of other things i dislike about them.
Headphones - Klipsh x10is...zomg.  I listen to everything on these now because they sound gorgeous.  Super comfortable, I love them but very antisocial, no mic

Now as a graduation present my brother got me the Energy Take Classic 5 pack which I am super stoked for.  These small but promising speakers should suit me well for the foreseeable future.  I'd like to compliment that with a sub and receiver though, and I would love some advice on putting those 2 together.  For the sub I was thinking a little dude, 8" should suffice to get some added fullness (115Hz crossover seems pretty high :/ ) without annoying apartment neighbors too much.  I was considering sticking with energy and hoping in with this guy.  240W peak 60W Continuous with variable crossover and a 200W amp might suit my purposes pretty well.  Important note: will also kind of match (not glossy though).  Due to reasons I don't understand, this thing has stereo inputs... does that do... anything if you have a dedicated sub channel already?

For the receiver I am really unsure and would love help.  I know I want it to connect to pandora since my TV is a non-internet TV, and I'd also like it to be able to access my media server which has all my music on it.  So far I think my front runner is the Onkyo TXNR-609.  Onkyo seems to have alot of these features without being ridiculously overpriced...its also 200 off right now.  My brother has an onkyo which has the 2eq (automatic setup of speakers by using a microphone in a couple different places) feature as well which I think is a great feature that I would like to have.  Its also THX Select2 Certified and this is where im really unsure.  Is it worth the extra cost to get that select2 (which means thx loudness control, sounds great for apartments where you cant always kick it up the whole way) or should I save 100 and get the lower power 509?

Lastly Im still thinking about replacing my headset/getting a different one since I currently have no ps3 compatibility.  I would like to stay wired, so that means im going USB headset I guess, any suggestions?  I really want to go all out and grab those astro a40s but with the amount of money im likely to spend on my home theater setup in the very near future for certain, that seems like a poor idea.  So budget USB headsets that don't sound like garbage and provide a mic that does not transmit my breathing, ideas?

Thanks for the input ahead of time!

For my desktop audio, I'm still sporting the older 5.1 Logitech 500W setup. It's definitely well over 5 years old (close to like 6 or 7), however the audio quality is superb still. Only feature I wish they had, is wireless (satellite speakers). I've tested the newer systems from Logitech, however it just doesn't have the power or quality that the old ones have. I don't plan on upgrading these, until I actually convert a room into a full fledged media room.

If your looking for a quality sounding headset, best to research what drivers and size of drivers the headsets are using. Honestly, the Astro brand reminds me of Alienware. Your simply paying a ton of money to buy the name.

Sorry I don't have much of a recommendation for what you were looking for. I've been content on my own audio setup, so I haven't bothered researching what is out there currently except headsets. I burn through headsets like none other. I have a rack full of em. Sad really. lol.

I've got a Logitech 7 speaker system (don't recall the model) that I've had for probably 7 years. Despite having it for so long, it annoys me. It's got a powered subwoofer that can't be disconnected, which sucks since it sounds like garbage. I stopped using it for a long time until I figured out I could muffle the sub by shoving a towel in it. Although it's a ghetto thing to do, it worked and it sounds much better. I do use my headset most of the time though. It's a Razer Carcharias, which is pretty comfortable to wear and I don't have any complaints about the audio. The mic quality is also good. If you're looking for sound quality, I think you'll want to stick with headphones/headset.

    thanks guys,

so call me what you like, but I've always preferred the sound from speakers than headphones.  I like being able to move around, talk to people, and share my music with others, and I just generally like the sound more it seems.  It comes with a lot of disadvantages (mainly cost) but none as significant to me as the feeling of wearing headphones.  Regardless how comfy headphones are I always feel like im, 1 being asocial 2 i can still tell they are there and its annoying and 3 the bass can never be felt, only heard.

I think i've made some good choices here, this is going to be a huge step for a 70W system with a 75W sub and 10% THD :( :( :( also excited for the HD codec support.  Anyway though, im still at a loss for what to do with the headphones.  Blood I realize you are payin for the name with astros but ive never found an alternative.  The alienware TactX are interesting but all 3.5mm no USB so I cant use them on the PS3 :(  If you have any suggestions for some USB headphones you've liked I would be very interested to hear what you have to say.

@kyle lol the towel play is kind of common, but it really shouldnt be necessary unless you have a real unfortunate sub.  I think if you heard a good quality system, you might change your mind, but its expensive and rather inconvenient so I understand where you are coming from.  the Carcharias are also 3.5mm as opposed to USB so I cant use those either though.

All suggestions welcome on USB headsets (i assume all usb work with ps3)  Thanks so far guys!

I would recommend the Logitech F540 or Steelseries Siberia v2 for a USB headset.

    Logitech F540

I have tried this headset, although I have not owned it. I do own it's brother the G930. In fact I own two of those I liked it so much (me, guest), which wasn't cheap. This headset is wireless and the batteries in these do last up to 7 to 10 hours, depending on the volume. Specifically states it supports PS3 and Xbox 360. I find the flip up mic to be an amazing feat, I use it all the time. The only downside is that it is not 7.1 surround sound. However the sound is great, so it's not a real problem. You might also consider checking out the G35, which is a wired version and has 7.1 surround sound.

    Steelseries Siberia v2

I own this headset (got the red version). If you want comfort, this headset is amazing. It beats out any headset in the market, when it comes to comfort. You'll literally forget your wearing it. No joke. Benefits from using 50mm drivers. I found although it has huge drivers, it doesn't has as much bass as the G930 which will vibrate your ears off from the deep bass.. however the sound is amazingly crisp and clean. Only issue I ever had, was with the mic. I like it to be attached. However if you don't mind it, or even like it, then this headset is great.
