Anyone ever been to one? I see there's one in Irvine starting tomorrow for the next 3 nights, sponsored by One Nation Of Gamers. Could be fun to go to. |
Can you explain to me what a barcraft is? I could google it, but then I'd have to move my mouse up there and open a new tab...too much effort. |
Barcraft is where a bunch of peeps get together in a bar type setting and watch eSports. It began with Starcraft and that's where the term was coined. It's like going to Oggi's to watch Philip Rivers pass for 350 yards and 3 TDs against the Raiders, except you're watching an eSports tournament. I think it's mostly Starcraft or League of Legends at this point. |

The organization I run at my university for hosting large LANs also hosts a Barcraft for every MLG. We manage to cover all the events in our current venue with different streams on each TV of the live SC2, Halo, and what ever else is going on in the MLG for that weekend. Normally MLG is just SC2, and LoL stuff now though since there aren't any really any true competitive FPS games besides Quake. EDIT: I guess I didn't really say if I enjoy them or not. I enjoy it when everything goes fine with the computers and the network and I'm not running around fixing shit all night. I've watched, and competed in eSports for a long time, well before this sudden growth in popularity so to get to watch them in a bar, on a big screen, with a good quality stream is enjoyable for me. How ever I'll admit that no matter how good streaming gets it'll never be as good as Valves spectator systems like HLTV for CSS or the spectator built into the Dota2 client. The issue with when we do Dota2 tournaments and spectate the matches from the client is that then someone has to control the camera. |

Barcrafts are not my thing, at least not yet. I enjoy going to the bar with friends, and if gaming comes up as a topic or for the nights topic that's fine. Don't think esports is on the same level as watching actual sports at a bar for me. Maybe when virtual reality comes out, and they have arenas like in TRON, and crazy events that only could be pulled off in a digital world. Until that point, no. |
I may be with bloodbath at this point. I don't think i'd want to go to a bar to watch any of these tournaments, and possibly it's just because the games, at this point, don't interest me. Now If they start having FPS matches that might be interesting. I'd always be willing to go to one for Dota 2 as well. |
I can see myself watching a good FPS match like Halo or Battlefield or something. |
Yeah, games out right now are not at the same hype and intensively level like an actual sports game - and for me it would be hard to sit there and just watch someone click around, because most barcraft games are just that. Battlefield, Halo, would be on a more appropriate level. Right now, that kinda stuff is more at the level of, gather at someones house, buy some beer, and watch games; not actually out in public. When virtual reality comes out, where you have people at a central location, wired up, and are in a virtual battlefield killing each other, then it's worthy of a public viewing. |

The Super World Championship Series of Virtual Killing has a nice ring to it. |

I disagree, I think the complexity ofo sc2 makes it like a super high paced chess match. I am also biased, a long time fan, and I also like chess :P Anyway i've been watching it for years, and I think its awesomely fun. But to each their own, ill enjoy my eSports, you guys can enjoy watching football :) |

I would LOVE to go to one of these! I think StarCraft would be interesting to watch but that's only because I've been watching "When the Cheese Fails" and I love the commentary xD I realize it'd be completely different watching an actual eSport sort of thing, but it'd be interesting to say the least. Edit: I'd still rather watch some NHL.... GO LEAFS GO. xD |
