    From the Asheron's Call forums:

    Greetings!

Asheron’s Call 2 has returned! We have opened up a new server for anyone who has an active Asheron’s Call subscription to play Asheron’s Call 2 for free! Although we would have loved to revisit some of our old characters with you, we were not able to bring over any of your old characters. We do, however, present this new Asheron’s Call 2 server, Dawnsong, to all active Asheron’s Call players with a paid subscription or who purchase an ACTD retail key and subscribe.

What does this mean to you?

Below is a link to the Asheron’s Call 2 client installer so you may get the game up and running. This will provide access to the new Dawnsong server. Although the server has passed our initial tests, we have a lot of monitoring and tweaking to do to the game environment and we want to ensure that our players understand that. This game service will be provided as a beta for all players with an active Asheron’s Call account. That said, the game server is currently up and running. So join us for a nostalgic trip back to a Dereth where the golden age was not interrupted.

If you are an active paid AC1 subscriber there will be no need to create a new account for Asheron’s Call 2; you will simply log into the Asheron’s Call 2 game using your current Asheron’s Call credentials.

Please note that this is a beta, the environment might have some known issues that we will be working on. The friend’s list functionality, for example, will not be available when this new server goes into beta. As can happen during a beta release, the server might be taken down for maintenance or troubleshooting at some inconvenient times if deemed necessary. See you in game!

Well this was totally out of left field.  Thoughts?

Sounds cool.  I never played either Asheron's Call game.  But i'd imagine if I was a player i'd be all over this.  Do you play AC?

I played AC, but don't think I'd play AC2. Kinda outdated for my taste. I like classics, but that's a very old classic.

I read a story on this last night. The time stamps of when the games were released were so old that the article is actually a bit confusing. Either way it sounds really cool that this company is bringing back the good parts of what looks like a failed game. The fact that this series began competing years ago with Everquest but still has a monthly subscription has to mean something for the sequel server being launched right?

Not sure if I will ever play but definitely grabbed my attention.

    Well here's the thing

Asheron's Call 2 was released in 2002.  It shut down in 2005.

Asheron's Call was always more successful than its sequel.  AC2 was really the first sequel to an MMORPG, and it was radically different from the original game.  Keep in mind, the game was released in 2002, but it actually plays somewhat similar to more recent MMORPGs like World of Warcraft.  The UI used by WoW seems to be inspired by the UI in AC2.

It shut down because of numerous bugs and glitches that plagued it for months after release and the fact that many Asheron's Call subscribers hated it.  Asheron's Call was always pretty fair behind EQ, DAoC, and UO anyway, so the game just didn't have much of a fanbase.

What's weird is they just decided to open up a single AC2 server for AC1 subscribers seemingly out of the blue.  No explanation was given, and no one knows if Turbine will put forth any effort to develop the game further.  They claim it's a beta, so perhaps they're preparing a release version that will be F2P like DDO and LotRO.

I've played both AC and AC2.  I was lucky enough to experience AC when it was still marginally relevant in the MMO scene.  I tried AC2 shortly before the game shut down, right after the first expansion released.

I don't claim to be a veteran of either game as I never spent a lot of time in either of them.  In those days, my time was spent in EQ, EQ2, and Guild Wars.
