Hey everyone, I was writing about a game sequel the other day and of course, at some point the inescapable thought about Duke Nukem Forever popped into my head and I had a good laugh. Then I wondered what it would be like to have a long awaited game released only for it to suck, or possibly worse maybe never come out at all. So just wondering, any games you waited for only to be let down? Or is there one you are still waiting on? (and I don't mean 'oh I can't wait for Assassins Creed 8' - I mean long waits)

For me, I'm still waiting for the Wii U to come out with the new super smash brothers. Other than that I would enjoy if Toejam & Earl 3 was made correctly instead of that horrible joke they probably tricked a total of 10 fans from the 90's into buying. (At least mine was used)

I think the big answer to this is Diablo 3.  Not that everyone hated it, but theres been a lot of criticism of it, especially the lack of late game content and it didnt come out for like... 10 years?  Oddly enough the best counter-example in my eyes is made by the same company.  Starcraft 2 is awesome.  Frankly I'm glad blizzard worked on SC2 harder than D3, but it still has shaken my confidence in blizzard.

Strangely, its hard for me to come up with a sequel game I wish they had made, there really aren't any.  I feel like the video game industry takes full advantage of any recycleable material from previous games, and to be honest I really wish they'd stop.  This is going to derail the OP a bit but lets be serious and look at some of the big games right now that I actually know something about.  Console: COD (8 iterations now?) Halo (6?) AC (5?) GOW(3). PC Starcraft(2! horray!) Guildwars(2) WOW (500).  Thats the smallest list I can make too, what about all the mario games, uncharted, tomb raider, splinter cell, borderlands, ,bioshock, FEAR, rainbow6, GTA, Starwars, deadspace, resident evil, hitman ... Now I realize its easier to make a sequel, and its probably safer too, but still guys come ON, show me some properly new content.  There aren't enough Watchdogs and Dishonored in the gaming industry and its driving me nuts.

Lastly to derail us even more, this is a major complaint I have with movies too, but I'll let you think of your own little (oh wait, I meant enormous) list of sequels in your heads :)

My honest answer... Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts

Banjo Kazooie was an AMAZING title. Sure, It was a "Collectathon" but, the game was built around it. The storyline, the controls, the atmosphere really sucked you in, Immersion was this one of this game's many strong points. And Banjo Tooie was an amazing sequel. Filled with content, and that same magical feeling you got while playing the first title. Rareware knew what they were doing at the time... And then they were bought out... by Microsoft Corporation..... (They don't even deserve a bold-type)... And all of the promises for Banjo Threeie (as mentioned at the end of Banjo Tooie) had little hope... There was even a little video teaser of the new game. A Nex-Gen platformer.... Fans were thrilled. Then, in 2,000-whatever, a beacon came down from the heavens. Banjo Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts was finally released. The name was a haunting prelude to the horrible events to come. Fans assumed that this was Threeie, shrugged it off, popped the game in... And found out. That the game was about,,, CARS. CARS?!?! CAAAARRRS? All of this hype. AALLLLL of this waiting.... To find out, the game was about CARS. I dunno 'bout you, but I did not see anything in the Teaser Trailer about CARS.that's not even the worst slap in the face about this damned game. I get it. If you wanted to make a game about cars, fine. Cool. BUT AT LEAST MAKE THE WORLD SO THERE'S STUFF TO DO. I mean...C'mon. You get this big, beautifully polished overworld, WITH NO POINT TO IT.

This is probably the worst injustice ever done to the gaming community. Well, in my opinion, of course.

Keirosen, I'm in such awe of you right now! I saw this thread and came here for the sole purpose of posting about the sequel of my dreams: Banjo Kazooie 3, or Banjo Threeie, if you will. I never imagined that I'd come in here and find that someone had beaten me to it. Super cool.

It's been sad, these last few years, watching Rare's reputation go down hill, because they really are some of the worlds most creative and talented developers. And what's most frustrating, is that Microsoft is 100% to blame for all of it. They have Rare bound by creative shackles and there's no freedom for them to explore the projects that they come up with. Now they're being forced to make games for Kinect -- a peripheral that Microsoft refuses to give up on, despite it flatlining years ago.

That being said, I played Nuts and Bolts and, while I totally respect your take on it, I really thought it was a very enjoyable game. Sure, some of the missions got repetitive, but I loved the creative freedom you were allowed in solving the different challenges. My only real issue with the game was that it just didn't feel like a Banjo game. It came off as something that Rare had in the works, and Microsoft came along and said, "Cool, now take your game and wrap the Banjo world around it to sell more copies." It was a good idea that should have stayed far away from Spiral Mountain...

But luckily, there may be some hope! You should read this article. It won't be Banjo Kazooie specifically, and, if it moves forward, it's still years away from seeing the light of day, but it's definitely something to keep an eye on.

btw, lucig3n, I'm glad you mentioned Watch Dogs! I saw the E3 preview/demonstration and it looked suuuuper cool. Between that, AC3, SC Blacklist and ZombieU (just to name a few), Ubisoft has a serious lineup of titles coming out.

Lucig3n - I agree sequels tend to be recycled content, but the only thing I'll add is that many sequels (movies or games) are fantastic. I don't believe there are any movie sequels that are better than the first though. (Example: Pirates of the Caribbean 2 is a great movie, but 1 is tons better) (Gamewise: Toejam& Earl 2 is great but 1 is easily more fun)
On the multiple sequel note - yes it sucks that they recycle so many games. Halo anniversary/odst are fun but milked money ideas in my opinion. However, each halo game from 1-2-3-Reach are successively better. As is the same for super mario and some other series i'm sure. Mario has gotten better ever year, and even with tons of unneeded games there are perfect gems that recreate his bullshit story into extremely creative and fun ways. I think CoD is just tweaked over the last 5 releases. So I guess im saying there's hits and misses with sequels in video games. A movie is good or bad on its own not in comparrison to other movies. Comparitively sure they are worse than the originals.

Back to my original topic I hear Diablo 3 is that way. I was waiting for it forever to the point where my friends would update me everytime there was news. So I let them buy it and rate it for me. 3 weeks later everyone was saying don't buy it, go figure. Sucks that it happens to a good series, but if you ask for more you have to expect some crap sometimes I guess?

It's awesome you guys bring up Banjo Kazooie though. I LOVED that game and it's sequel. So much so in fact that years after I thought it would be a game of the past I downloaded a demo seeing it pop up on xbox live. Wow did I hate that demo. I was expecting Banjo Kazooie and to come to that instead was a severe disappointment even in that short moment.

Rare was seriously the best though. Even though Goldeneye was the worst FPS in history because of N64's psychopath controller design, it was still one of my most memorable games. Conker's Bad Fur Day is one of my favorite games of all time. Kick ass story, cursing when I was at a younger age, snipers and samurai swords? What more could a kid ask for. Also Jet Force Gemini I think, if anyone ever played that. Overall Rare knew how to do 3D worlds pretty well. Donkey Kong 64 was an amazing game, one of the best boss battles ever! lol

Clearly I derailed this into an N64 nostalgia moment but don't care! I want to play Grunty's Furnace Fun damnit!

"Pirates of the Caribbean 2 is a great movie," said no one ever... until now! lolol, jk

Sorry, I gotta hit on a few points here (and keep in mind, I'm not saying you're wrong, I just have some different opinions) --

Anyone who says there aren't any movie sequels better than their predecessor has clearly never seen Shrek 2 (or any of the Harry Potter movies, for that matter). The biggest issue that plagues most game/movie sequels is the hype. If people would learn to ground their expectations, I think many sequels would be accepted more favorably. That being said, yes there are plenty of sequels out there that are just duds.

It's actually pretty ironic that you brought up ODST, because I read your comment about it JUST after posting in my intro thread that ODST is my favorite Halo game. For once, Bungie modified their formula to change the perspective, change the tone and change the stakes. Obviously there's a difference between something being a milked idea and something being a true spinoff sequel. Call of Duty and Madden games are the ultimate offenders of milked games. Years pass with equally as many sequels, but nothing significant changes from each previous iteration. For me, ODST was more than unique enough to warrant recognition as it's own game. My general rule for determining a milked sequel is that if the content is nothing more than something that could have been released as a downloadable content update for the previous game, then it's just a cash grab for the developer.

I'm super happy that you brought up Donkey Kong 64 though. I spent countless hours making sure to collect every single banana in that game. And the thing about Banjo Kazooie that I don't think I'll ever forget is the soundtrack. There isn't a single world in that game that I don't remember the theme music to.

Oh, and one more sequel I'd love to see (and tell me what you think): Timesplitters 4. I loved TS2 to death!! And while 3 was a bit of a misstep, I'm still eagerly awaiting the followup!

Oh my god finally someone I can be honest with. Okay yes I agree sequels can be great! Shrek 2 was an amazing example. Harry Potter was even better. Harry Potter got better movie by movie in my honest opinion, but that's probably because I never read ANY of the books whatsoever. Just a movie junkie.

You can disagree on Pirates 2 lol, Just something that first popped into my head and that I have thought since it was ripped on it's release. I would probably be a bad movie critic because I enjoy way too many movies. I say Pirates 2 is good because I had a lot of fun watching it, and I don't think it undid how great the original was. The third pirates I think you could argue it did, again even if it was enjoyable. Saw clips of pirates 4 and I don't want to watch it obviously.

ODST I honestly just never utilized for what it was. I stick to multiplayer modes mainly because I wouldn't have even started laying Halo or get an xbox if it wasn't for how much fun multiplayer was and brought people together where I was. LAN PARTY! I got ODST for early beta use of reach actually, and because my halo 3 disc was getting scratched anyway so load times where annoying. I agree with your other post though that 343 taking over was the right move. Bungie is amazing but sometimes you need a new vision on your favorite things. Madden and CoD are bad though you're right. In fact to prove something's wrong, I don't own a Madden game yet would play everyday if I did. But I'm not spending 60 bucks for something that I will not want to play because everyone is playing the new tweaked one in a few months. It sucks. ODST may not have been milked, but I wonder how well it would have sold without beta usage or the 'same' multiplayer capabilities.

I've never tried TimeSplitters so maybe I should. I have to say that the soundtrack for countless N64 games including Banjo Kazooie are engrained in my head too, for some reason often with the image of 'WishyWashyBanjo' hopping around.

There is a short list of sequels I admit have been good.  Ex: Cod4 was probably the highlight of the series for me.  bf2142 remains my favorite bf game, halo2, LBA2, Elderscrolls 5, aaaaand Time Splitters 3.  Not saying thats my entire list but I was reminded of this from Mark's comment about TS3 being a misstep.  that game is SO underrated.  I went into that game with no idea what to expect and it is BRILLIANT.  Its prompted me to make a new post on games other people call garbage that you think are awesome.  So to stay on my original tangent, while there were some good sequels, they are, for me, left in the shadow of the mass of sequels that weren't worth making.  In fact from my experience the only series I can say legitimately got better for me with every installment was the elderscrolls series.  Hats off to you bethesda!

Okay, maybe "misstep" wasn't quite the word I was looking for. Don't get me wrong, I really liked Timesplitters 3, I just don't think there was ever any chance of it living up to my opinion of TS2, which IMO had some of the most fun campaign levels in a shooter game ever (not to mention its soundtrack!!). There is actually one level from the TS3 campaign that really sticks out though... Remember the haunted house mission where you had to fight the Deerhaunter (mounted head deer monster) and eventually went into the basement where you could play around with room pressure on the people in the test rooms? lol, Classic!

So the last comment was made before the release of AC3. Resounding hatred has been shown for the game, to the point of not wanting it to exist.

So my question becomes: Can we still consider AC3 (or AC4) a long-awaited sequel?

I think that Assassin's Creed 3 is in the same exact position as AC1 -- it's a really good foundation for future sequels. They had a lot of new features implemented, but few of them felt seamless. It ended up offering an experience that lacked the polish that we've come to expect from the Ezio trilogy. I love the series, but this one needed more time.

On the game's behalf though, the multiplayer is still amazing.

I haven't played an AC game since the AC2.  I always found them somewhat boring.  The original Assassin's Creed had the distinction of being one of the best looking games on the market when it released.

Ooo multiplayer. Considering I tend to gravitate toward playing with other people and had satisfaction just running around in AC1 sandbox just killing randoms, which as superxero89 mentioned was probably due to the fact that nothing else quite like it existed at the time.

I may have to go play soon. (you know, moneyless play)

I'm waiting for Persona 5. Both 3 and 4 were fantastic games.

Maybe another IP based on the Catherine universe as well?

Another Xenoblades game maybe? Except this time not be like 6 years in between Xenosaga and Xenoblades.

But I ugess we all know, we just want another Smash Brothers.

Absolutely. I can't wait for the first troll announcement that makes us fans antsy for 2+ more years.

People love their Nintendo huh? I would very much like them to make a Conker's Bad Fur Day sequel. Not some stupid remake for the xbox, even if the storyline was perfectly remade anyway (it's still the same dang game!). I don't know why I love that game so much. Maybe because I was a child who loved movie references already. And cursing. (lol) I am also very excited for Final Fantasy XIV Realm Reborn being released after SE splooged all over the first go around.

Howdy, Stranger!
