Over the weekend the incredibly popular crowd sourcing website Kickstarter announced to its members via email that the website had suffered a security breach. According to the official blog post law enforcement officials contacted Kickstarter on Wednesday with reports that their security had been compromised. They did state that credit card information remained secure but usernames, email addresses, mailing addresses, phone numbers, and encrypted passwords were vulnerable during the breach.
Apparently only 2 Kickstarter accounts showed signs of unauthorized activity but it is still recommended that you change your account password if you frequent the website. Some users have expressed their concern regarding the gap of almost 72 hours between the initial breach and the information email to users to which Kickstarters CEO Yancey Strickler responds:
We immediately closed the breach and notified everyone as soon we had thoroughly investigated the situation.
It's a small negative blip on an otherwise massively successful few years for Kickstarter but one that will most likely disappear in a few short weeks. Kickstarter recently published stats stating that the website has attracted almost 1 billion dollars in financial support from 5.6 million backers with almost 57,000 projects successfully funded.
Has the security breach destroyed your faith in Kickstarter or will you continue to support the gaming related projects?
