MMO Glossary
- 1337 - Numeric code for “Leet,” which is short for “elite.” Can apply to particularly difficult monster, or very talented player.
- AC - Armor Class – determines how much armor a particular character has, which in turn determines the damage they take.
- Add - An additional monster that runs into a fight already in progress.
- AFAIK - As far as I know.
- AFK - Away from keyboard.
- Aggro - The way in which a monster reacts to a player. If you have “aggro,” you have done something to anger the monster.
- Aggro Radius - The distance at which mobs will react to your player character.
- AGI - Agility stat – determines your ability to dodge attacks or land critical hits.
- AI - Artificial Intelligence – used to refer to enemy decisions and attacks.
- Alt - Alternate character for players with several characters in the same game.
- AO - Anarchy Online
- AOE - Area of Effect – a spell that hits more than one target in any given area.
- AP - Attack Power – determines your melee combat damage.
- Avatar - Another word for player character.
- BF - Boyfriend.
- Bind - The term for what occurs when you use a binding item. Bound items cannot be traded or sold.
- Bot - Automated player character, usually run by third-party software.
- BRT - Be right there.
- BTW - By the way.
- Buff - A temporary spell that enhances certain aspects of your character or the characters of others.
- Camping - Waiting for a player or monster to spawn by staying in one specific area.
- Caster - A player character or monster that uses spells as their primary damage mechanism.
- CC - Crowd Control – used to incapacitate one foe while you deal with another.
- Class - The specific type of character you play. For example, Mage, Hunter, Rogue or Shaman.
- COH - City ofHeroes
- Cooldown - The time between using an item or spell and it being available for use again.
- Corpse Run - Running from a graveyard as a ghost to recover your dead body after being killed.
- Crafting - Making items through an in-game profession.
- Creep - Alternate word for monster.
- Crit - Short for “Critical Hit” – a spell or attack that does extra damage.
- Critters - Monsters that do not attack, such as deer or bunnies.
- DD - Direct damage – an ability that does damage instantly.
- Debuff - A temporary spell that reduces stats or hinders your character’s abilities.
- Ding - A celebratory exclamation shouted when a new level is reached.
- DKP - Dragon Kill Points – a system for determining who gets loot in large groups.
- DMG - Damage
- DnD - Do Not Disturb
- DoT - Damage over time – a spell that causes damage over a set period of time.
- DPS - Damage per second – how much damage a character causes per second.
- Drop - A loot item that falls off slain monsters.
- Duel - A casual fight between two players that does not result in death.
- Dupe - Copies of items made through exploits or hacks.
- Epic - High-quality items or materials.
- EQ - EverQuest
- Exploit - Breaking the rules of a game by taking advantage of a bug or glitch.
- F2P - Free to play.
- Faction - One side of a multi-side war in any given game.
- Farming - Repeatedly killing the same group of monsters to earn specific materials.
- FFA - Free for all – usually used to describe loot rules in which anyone can loot anything.
- Gank - Jumping and killing a player of significantly lower level.
- GG - Good Game
- Gimp - A character not played to its full potential due to user incompetence.
- GM - Game Master – game employees that enforce the rules.
- Griefer - Player character causing problems for other players by killing important characters or blocking needed access points.
- Grinding - Killing monsters for hours at a time to earn gold, materials or experience.
- Guild/Clan - A group of players who hang out for socialization or game progression.
- HoT - Heal over time – a spell that repairs player damage over a certain period of time.
- HP - Hit points – how much health a player has. When HP runs out, the player dies.
- Hybrid - A class that can perform several roles, such as DPS or tanking.
- Incoming - A warning to other players that enemies are inbound.
- INT - Intellect – usually determines the mana pool of caster characters.
- Kiting - Forcing a monster to follow you over a long distance to either avoid damage or grief other players.
- KOS - Kill on Sight
- L2 - Lineage II
- Lag - The term for the delay between key presses and in-game action.
- Leveling - Progressing from level 1 to the level cap with your character.
- LFG - Looking for Group
- Link - Linking a specific item in chat so other players may examine it.
- Log - Logging out of the game.
- Loot - Items dropped by monsters.
- LOS - Line of Sight – some player attacks and spells cannot be used without a clear line of sight.
- MA - Main assist. The character responsible for helping the tank in big fights.
- Macro - A small snippet of player-written code that performs specific tasks.
- Mana - The resource consumed by spell casting.
- Mats - Materials for crafted goods.
- Min-Maxing - Pouring over stat sheets and item options to maximize a character’s abilities.

- MMOFPS - Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter
- MMOG - Massively Multiplayer Online Game
- MMORPG - Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game
- MMORTS - Massively Multiplayer Online Real-time Strategy Game
- Mob - Monster or critter.
- MT - Mistell – the phrase for accidentally sending private message to the wrong person.
- Mule - A character used only to store materials or gold.
- Named - A mob that is slightly more rare than normal, and has a name instead of creature designation.
- Nerf - Lessening the effectiveness of a particular skill or ability.
- Newbie - A new player.
- Ninja - A person who steals loot that is not theirs.
- NPC - Non-player character – the term for friendly in-game characters.
- Nuke - Damage-dealing spell.
- NVM - Never mind
- OOM - Out of Mana
- OOR - Out of Range
- Owned - Defeated embarrassingly.
- Patch - A small or large update that fixes or changes the game.
- PC - Player character.
- Ping - The time it takes your game to communicate with the server.
- PK - Player kill
- Pop - Monsters spawning in a specific area
- Port - Short for “teleport.”
- PST - Please send tell – used to tell players to private message you.
- Pull - Attacking a monster and bringing it back to your group.
- PvE - Player vs. Environment – players cannot attack one another.
- PvP - Player vs. Player – players can and will attack one another.
- Quest - A mission from a non-player character to complete certain objectives.
- Raid - A large-scale dungeon requiring ten or more players.
- RDY - Ready
- Rebuff - A request to re-apply all expired player buffs.
- Release - Let your ghost out of your body and prepare for the corpse run.
- Relog - Log out and back in to clear bugs or check mods.
- Respawn - The time between killing a monster and that monster coming back to life.
- Respec - Changing your character’s skill builds for more efficiency or new uses.
- Rez - Resurrecting a character
- Roll - Rolling a random number to determine who gets loot.
- Rollback - Changing a server or character to how it was a few hours ago.
- RP - Role-play – in which players talk in character.
- Skills - The various abilities and talents your character has.
- Social - A mob that calls for help from other mobs.
- SOE - Sony Online Entertainment
- Solo - Killing a powerful monster by yourself; alternatively, playing alone.
- SP - Skill Points – the points you invest in building your character’s abilities.
- Spawn - The area in which a monster is created, or the birth of a new monster on the server.
- Tank - A character designed to absorb damage and protect other characters.
- Taunt - Forcing a monster to attack you instead of someone else. Used primarily by tanks.
- Threat - How much a given monster wants to attack you. Tanks usually have high threat, but damage and healing spells generate threat as well.
- TK - Team Killer -a player that kills friendly players instead of the enemy.
- Toon - Another word for player character or avatar.
- Train - Bringing a mob or bunch of mobs to attack another player character.
- Twink - A low-level character with impressively powerful items. Usually an alt.
- UO - Ultima Online
- WB - Welcome Back
- WoW - World of Warcraft
- WTB - Want to buy – used when purchasing specific items.
- WTS - Want to sell – used when selling specific items.
- XP - Experience points.
- Zone - A specific area on the game’s world map.
